Department Overview
The English Department in Christian Brothers Grammar School is committed to fostering a love of language, literature and communication in all students. We aim to develop confident readers, thoughtful writers and articulate speakers who can engage critically with a wide range of texts and ideas. Through active learning and group activities, our department strives to create an inclusive and supportive environment.
Key Stage 3 - Overview
- All KS3 classes focus on the key recursive skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
- All KS3 classes enjoy a weekly reading period in our dedicated department Library.
- All KS3 classes have a weekly spellings/Literacy class.
- All KS3 classes also engage in drama, role play and improvisation.
Key Stage 4 - Overview
All pupils in Years 11 and 12 are taught both GCSE English Language and Literature.
We avail of the modular approach through CCEA, with examinations undertaken in both Year 11 and 12.
- Year 11 English Language: Unit 1 (exam in Summer Series)
- Year 12: English Language: Unit 4 (exam in Winter Series)
- Year 11: English Literature: Unit 1 (exam)
- Year 12: English Literature: Unit 2 (exam)
Controlled Assessment tasks for both subjects are completed over the duration of Year 11 and 12.
Post 16 - English Literature
Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced GCE English Literature encourage students to develop their interest in literary studies by reading widely, independently and critically. Students will explore literary traditions, study texts from the 14th century to the present, and consider contemporary cultural, moral, spiritual and political issues.

AS English Literature helps students:
- become confident, independent, reflec-tive readers
- understand the background of the texts they study
- consider alternative interpretations
- express personal responses clearly in speech and writing
A Level English Literature enables students to:
- broaden and deepen AS knowledge and skills
- explore comparisons and connections between texts
- appreciate cultural and historical influ-ences on readers and writers
Career Opportunities
A Level English Literature is essential for studying English at degree level. The skills gained also support further study in fields such as Law, History, Drama/Theatre Arts, Journalism, Psychology, Estate Management, Politics, Media Studies, Business Studies and Languages.
