Department Overview
Spanish has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it is easy to see why. As one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, it is a valuable skill for students to develop. In fact, there are more native Spanish speakers than native English speakers, and Spanish is the official language of over 20 countries across the globe.
The study of Spanish is therefore an important part of the pupils’ curriculum. It equips them with a useful practical tool for communication in an international context; it strengthens their ability to express themselves; it enables them to develop transferable language learning skills; We emphasise the importance of communication, fostering an appreciation for diverse cultures.
By developing linguistic ability, we prepare pupils to engage confidently and competently in a globalised world, enhancing their employability and sense of adventure. We follow the CCEA GCSE Spanish specification, supporting pupils in developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
The course provides a strong foundation for progression to A Level study, while also equipping pupils with practical communication skills that are highly valuable in the workplace and in everyday life.
Key Stage 3 - Overview
They will learn about Spanish and Hispanic culture, festivals and customs. They will use basic role-plays based on real life situations to help prepare them for GCSE. Pupils will also develop ICT skills using word processing to complete essays and display work. The study of Spanish in CBS is not only useful for later life, but also enjoyable and stimulating. Spanish is introduced to the student body in Year 8. It is delivered to all class groups on three periods per week. From Day 1 there is a strong emphasis on the features of Spanish pronunciation, accents, and intonation, allowing pupils to quickly feel confident enough to speak and read aloud.

Why Study Spanish?
Spanish is the world’s most widely spoken language, with over 426 million native speakers and growing global influence. Its importance in business, travel, public services, law, medicine and many other careers makes it a highly valuable skill. Learning a language also builds confidence, independence, communication skills, IT competence and strong analytical abilities.
What Is Expected of a Student?
Students should show enthusiasm for the language and culture, participate fully in class activities and use online and school resources
to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
Course Outline
The AS/A2 course in Spanish builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding acquired at GCSE, and is aimed at developing these to a high degree of linguistic competence. Students develop knowledge and understanding of themes relating to the society and culture, past and present, of the country or community where the language is spoken.
GCE Spanish gives students the opportunity to explore two broad areas of interest. These are:
- social issues and trends; and either
- political culture or intellectual culture or artistic culture.
Students explore the areas of interest by studying four themes:
- Relationships (AS);
- Culture and Lifestyle (AS);
- Young People in Society (A2); and
- Our Place in a Changing World (A2).

Beyond the Classroom
There has been cultural trips to Barcelona with Key Stage 4 pupils, and for many students this is a memorable highlight of their school experience. We also take part in the Spelling Bee competition, where our pupils compete against other schools in Omagh and Derry. We enjoy celebrating European Day of Languages at the start of every academic year.
